Katisha Paul / Reclaiming Indigenous Heritage
Vancity, U Pretty!
A political science student from the Stʼatʼimc nation, Katisha Paul wants to advocate for the reclaiming of Indigenous peoples’ lands and rights through the legal system. Her pursuit of social justice is one of the ways to do that.
Wearing a striking piece of art, Katisha points to her skirt and proudly explains that this special gift has Indigenous designs sewn into the fabric, a contemporary twist on ribbon skirts. Abalone shells, which have spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous nations, adorn her ears. A brilliant blue turquoise ring complements the earthy red beaded necklace, both pieces created by the Navajo nation. Hugging Katisha lovingly is her father’s handmade gift to her mother when they were in their teens, a one-of-a-kind leather and metal studded belt, a precious expression of love.
Katisha believes in the revitalising of Indigenous peoples through their reconnection to the wisdom of their sacred and traditional knowledges, cultures, and communities.
With centuries of heritage passed down, and now residing in her, Katisha carries herself with a sense of pride and purpose.
